Kanlaon Volcano nag-alburoto, nasa Alert Level 1

The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) at Alert Level 1 acknowledges the status of the Kanlaon Volcano in Negos Occidental after seeing seismic activity.

According to the Phivolcs, volcanic activity could be considered abnormal, having recorded 80 volcanic quakes in the past 24 hours and of which 77 had magmatic fluids.

The Phivolcs do not rule out that recorded seismic activity may be followed by steam-driven or phreatic eruption even when no visible smoke emanates from the crater.

Alert Level 1 means the volcano is in an abnormal condition and is strictly prohibited from entering the 4km Permanent Danger Zone.

Flying a plane near its peak is also prohibited.

The Phivolcs are also urging residents to be alert as well as the local government unit is preparing for what may happen in the event of continuous volcanic eruptions.
