It has already been almost ten years since the death of former AFP Chief of Staff General Angelo Reyes. His death was tragic. He k1lled himself.
He took his own life at the height of corruption charges against him during the administration of former President Gloria Macapagal Arroyo, when Reyes was the Secretary of the National Defense.
No one knows what trigger him to took his own l1fe. Some says that the tipping point of his death was because of former Senator Trillanes's brazen grilling in the Senate hearing in 2011. Trillanes said to him after Reyes said he wanted to protect his reputation, "You don't have any reputation to protect."
But before Reyes's su1cide, he resigned from his position as Secretary of National Defense during the Arroyo term. These are his words:
"Today I wish to announce that notwithstanding the baselessnes of the charges hurled against me, I decided to resign my position as Secretary of National Defense. One reason why I'm doing this is to give President Arroyo a free hand in dealing with the preset situation. Our democracy is under a serious threat from political opportunists as well the insurgents waiting in the wings, unless a drastic remedy is quickly bound. These elements I am convinced are going to be the nations' undoing."
